Medical Imaging Techniques

Image
Medical imaging is the technique and process of creating visual representations of the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention, as well as visual representation of the function of some organs or tissues ( physiology ). PET Scan ( Positron Emission Tomography Scan) A PET scan creates 3D images of the body, it does so by using Radioactive tracers which are administered to a patient through intravenous injection. The tracers are made up of molecules that are tightly bonded to radioactive atom called an isotope.   These carrier molecule interact with the specific proteins or sugars inside patient’s body. The carrier molecules that will be used totally depend on what the doctor is looking for. If she suspects growth of cancer tissue, she may use FDG , a modified form of glucose. When tissues absorb a lot of glucose, it may indicate a growth of cancerous tumour. The isotope produces small partic...

Mind-Blowing Medical Advances

3D printed body parts Driverless cars, artificial intelligence, smart watches – the future is truly upon us. With science and technology developing so quickly, medical breakthroughs continue to be made every day around the world. But what are some of the most profound advancements in recent years and how can they change the way we treat medical conditions? Here is one of the amazing advancement in medical science that has blown my mind completely. 3D printing is widely regarded as being industry-changing technology when it comes to consumer goods and manufacturing. But what’s not widely known is that scientists have successfully created human body parts using 3D printers. The team at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre developed a new technique that 3D-prints a tissue riddled with micro-channels, rather like a sponge, to allow nutrients to penetrate the tissue. The Integrated Tissue and Organ Printing System - or Itop - combines a bio-degradeable plastic which gives the struc...

Internet of Things (IoT)

ABSTRACT This article provides an overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) with emphasis on enabling technologies, protocols, and application issues. The IoT is enabled by the latest developments in RFID, smart sensors, communication technologies, and Internet protocols. The basic premise is to have smart sensors collaborate directly without human involvement to deliver a new class of applications. In the coming years, the IoT is expected to bridge diverse technologies to enable new applications by connecting physical objects together in support of intelligent decision making. INTRODUCTION The   Internet of things   ( IoT ) is the   inter-networking   of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and " smart devices "), buildings, and other items— embedded   with   electronics ,   software ,   sensors , actuators, and   network connectivity   that enable these objects to collect and exchange data....

Artificial Intelligence

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE We’re still a few years away from having robots at our beck and call, but AI has already had a profound impact in more subtle ways. Weather forecasts, email spam filtering, Google’s search predictions, and voice recognition, such Apple’s Siri, are all examples. What these technologies have in common are machine-learning algorithms that enable them to react and respond in real time. There will be growing pains as AI technology evolves, but the positive effect it will have on society in terms of efficiency is immeasurable . Introduction ·         Artificial intelligence   ( AI ) is   intelligence   exhibited by   machines . In   computer science , the field of AI research defines itself as the study of " intelligent agents ": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal.   Colloquially, the term "artificial intell...
